The Many Types of Spindle-Based Machines

There are many types of screw machines available. These production machines can be found in various configurations and are available by companies on the Internet. One of the most important specifications in determining the machine needed is the number of spindles it will have. This can range from machines with a single spindle, to 6, 7, or 8 multi spindle lathes. For example, a 6 spindle machine can cut a part on multiple axes and at up to thousands of revolutions per minute. A CNC lathe is controlled by a computer, programmed to run the all operations. Having a CNC incorporated into the machine will raise the cost of the operations, but for some industrial manufactures this investment is worthwhile.

Some multi spindle machines are available in horizontal or vertical versions, or some are available just as one or the other. Bench lathes sit on a bench or table. The smallest types can be handheld, such as for watches or jewelry, but oil field lathes have a large spindle bore capped on both sides by a chuck. Depending on the machine, each is configured for the type of material. There are lathes for woodworking, metalworking, and for even making glass.
