Good Fill Dirt for Barn Maintenance
By boxBrain on Oct 10, 2008 in Technology
Finding good fill dirt for the barn is an ongoing struggle. When a horse’s stall has a dirt floor, urine erodes the floor and frequent mucking takes the dirt away. As a result, fill dirt needs to be brought in to maintain the floor, generally about every year or so.
Unfortunately, you can’t use just any fill dirt for the barn floor. Most fill dirt is not very good quality, and tends to be very rocky soil. The problem is that small rocks can get wedged into the horse’s feet and bruise them. To avoid this, the rocks must be weeded out before putting the fill dirt in the horse’s stall.
It can be pretty difficult to pull lots of little rocks out of a big pile of dirt, so I would think that a topsoil screen would be awfully handy if you own a boarding stable or have horse property with your own barn. Topsoil screening machines work by screening out the larger particles, so that you’re left with just good, fine dirt. Because you’d only need it when you’re doing yearly maintenance around the barn, and would probably need to move it around the property quite a bit, a portable screener would probably be the most logical choice for a stables or private horse property.
