Where Does Your Trash Go?
By boxBrain on May 10, 2008 in General
Have you ever wondered what happens to your trash after you throw it away?
You probably already have an idea that when you throw something away, it gets picked up by the trash company and taken to a landfill. (If you are nice enough to recycle, some of it goes to a recycling plant to get turned into something else and reused.) But what you may not realize is that once your trash leaves your hands, you lose all control over where it really goes and who sees it.
Realistically, your trash is probably handled and seen by many different people on its journey to the landfill or recycling plant. This includes people who may not have authorization to be messing around with your trash, such as the potential thief going through your dumpster or the homeless guy scavenging from the landfill. Therefore it is very important to destroy all sensitive or identifying information with a paper shredder of some sort.
There are many different kinds of paper shredders on the market. For instance, you can get fairly basic home or office paper shredders almost anywhere. More heavy duty shredders, such as commercial paper shredders, are better for businesses or people who generate a lot of paper trash that needs to be destroyed before being thrown away.
As the saying goes, you can’t be too careful. Buying a paper shredder now is an excellent investment, and probably much preferred over the hassle of dealing with identity theft later on.
