A Future Working As a Physician Assistant
By Brains on Jan 19, 2009 in Health
Setting goals for oneself often involves fantasy. Imagining yourself as a doctor or a lawyer might seem fun and lucrative but reality plays a cruel trick and we often have to set our goals more in line with our capabilities and time constraints.
When I started college, I wanted to be a doctor. I majored in biology and took prerequisites to prepare me for medical school. The cruel trick was I was not a test taker and I didn’t do well on my entrance exams. After consulting an entrance counselor, I decided to take a year off in between college and applying for medical school the following year. What a difference a year makes. During my in-between year, I worked at a doctor’s office and realized there are other ways to work in the medical field without being a doctor.
I applied for a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies through a college offering a Master of Science Health Science Programs. This coursework prepared me to enter the medical field as a Physician Assistant with a great medical practice. I still get to work with patients and have a sphere of influence over their medical treatment. After working in the medical office for 3 years, I went onto to take courses in a Human Movement Graduate Program. I am now glad that I didn’t go to medical school because the path my career took has been a fantasy come true.
