My First Ring from a Boy

When I was 17 years old, I got my first ever “real” jewelry from a boy — that is, not some kind of fashion or tourist jewelry.

It was a gold ring with the tiniest diamond solitaire I’d ever seen — probably more of a diamond chip, actually.  My boyfriend at the time had bought it at a local pawn shop.  It couldn’t have cost much, because it would have been bought simply on its gold value, which wouldn’t have been much, because it was a slim ladies’ band.  The person who decided to get cash for gold for this ring probably thought they were going to sell scrap gold, because not many people would actually buy something that small!

I knew it wasn’t much but I was very proud of that ring.  Like I said, it was the first “real” jewelry a guy had ever bought me, so it seemed pretty special then.  The boyfriend didn’t actually last that long – he was a chump who couldn’t keep himself from going back to his old girlfriend — but I think I still have that ring around somewhere.  A girl has a right to her memories, I say, even once she finds a much better guy (and gets a much better ring!).
