Tour a College Before Enrolling

college students

It is important to always tour a college before enrolling in it.  The brochure is meant to tempt you, not to necessarily give you a complete picture of what life on campus is like.  Also, there are other things to consider than what is in the sales brochure — what the area around campus is like, what the professors are like, etc.

Of course, if you are going out of state for college, this may mean taking a trip and staying a few days.  This is the only way to be sure that you have the time to do everything you need to do — tour the school, checking out the surrounding area, talk to an enrollment counselor or instructors in your subject of study, etc.

When touring an out-of-state school, it is best to stay in a nearby hotel so that you can explore the area when you are not attending scheduled tours and other meetings.  You can find hotels and rates on several different booking types of websites, or you can just run a local Google search to see where hotels are located in relation to the school.

For example, if you are planning to attend the University of Denver, you might search for a hotel in Denver Colorado.  If you are thinking of attending a school in the South, you can compare prices for Atlanta, Georgia hotels just by spending an hour or so browsing online.

Remember, the idea is to spend some time checking out the school and making sure it is something you are interested in, so be sure to choose a hotel nearby, and give yourself several days to do what you need to do!

This is good advice for anyone. No one can make a good choice until they’ve actually toured the campus of several different colleges to see what they have to offer.

Absolutely true. The time you invest in checking out prospective colleges can mean the difference between a successful educational experience and having one that’s a waste of time.

I agree that you need to check out any college you’re considering going to, but it might get expensive doing all that traveling. It’s easier to visit the colleges that are close to you, and use the Internet to check out the ones that are far away.

College is getting so expensive now that nobody can afford to waste their education dollars. I think I’d start out by checking with the enrollment counselors from the schools I’m looking at, and narrow it down to my top two or three schools.
