Dorm Rooms and Pets Don’t Mix

My mom tells a story about how when she was in college, some friends of hers over at the guys’ school (yes, it was that long ago) decided to adopt a puppy and keep it in their dorm room.  This wasn’t just any ordinary puppy, though — it was a really big breed, like a Saint Bernard, Great Dane, or Bernese mountain dog.

Like most dorms, this one had a rule against having pets in the room, so the boys had to keep it a secret.  They fed the dog by sneaking it scraps from the dorm cafeteria, and took it outside to go to the bathroom when no one was around — mainly at night.

Of course, as the dog grew they had to sneak more and more food, and it also got harder and harder to keep the excursions outside to go potty a secret.  In the end, of course the school figured out what was going on, and made the boys find the dog another home.

My mom still talks about how cool that big dog was.  She had always wanted a big dog like that, and never really had a chance as a kid to get one.  And since she went from living with her parents (who were not really animal people) to living with my dad (who was a cat person), she never really had an opportunity to get the big dog she had always dreamed of.
