Where Writers May Speak
By bwb on Jun 12, 2009 in Business
The job of a writer doesn’t end when he or she has completed a book. In fact, the work is almost just beginning at that point. When the book is done, the author has to get it published. Then the writer has to market the book to make sure that it sells.
One of the most common ways that authors market their books is by doing book tours. They do readings or give lectures around the country to promote the book. Some of the places that writers may speak at include:
- Bookstores. This is the most common place for a book reading to take place.
- Bars and cafes. These spots run a close second to bookstores for literary events including author readings.
- Schools. Writers may speak at colleges or high schools. Niche writers may also speak at niche schools. For example, food writers may speak at culinary cooking schools.
- Literary conventions or topic-based conventions. Any type of convention or conference for writers / readers is a good place for writers to speak. Conventions for the topic of the book (such as cooking conventions for the food writer) are also good.
- Various events. Smart writers will market themselves widely by getting themselves booked to speak at a range of different events.
The writers who get out and speak at all of these places are usually the writers who sell the most books!
