What is Direct Selling?

There are a number of people who think that there is something wrong with direct selling. While some door-to-door salespeople can be really annoying, others are honestly just trying to get through another bad day selling on the road. However, door-to-door salespeople aren’t all that bad and not all direct selling is done on a door-to-door basis.

So then, what is direct selling?

Direct selling is the process of selling a product on a person to person basis, sometimes through a website, door-to-door sales, or even parties such as the tupperware parties held in people’s homes. These transactions take place by a person who is not directly hired by the company but rather is an independent contractor who buys directly from the company in their own name and then sell back to the customer who is wanting to buy a the product. Parties are a great way to show off a number of wares to a large number of people all at once and are often a way of getting sales. They are also fun as getting people happy will also get people to buy things since it doesn’t feel like you are being sold something, but rather that you are being shown something fun that you then want to buy.

There are a number of companies that use this method, such as Southwestern Company which sells books door-to-door. Some of these companies, (including Southwestern Company , ) will later hire on their better of their sales representatives, however once they are hired on they are no longer direct sales people.

There are some things that are not direct selling. For example whole selling, real estate sales, telemarketing , although usually done on a one on one basis are not part of direct selling. This is because these people are typically hired by a company or because they do not own the product themselves to sell to the customer.
